The Challenge? An Aging App.
The mobile app had become outdated. It was built using the Titanium SDK, with parts implemented in React Native, and carried an extremely large dependency footprint of 102 direct dependencies and 51 developer dependencies. Many of those libraries and packages were five years out of date, the app relied heavily on external packages that made it difficult to maintain and build, and it could no longer be cleanly built without significant modernization work. As a result, the Android app was at risk of being delisted from the Google Play Store.
While the mobile app was not the customer's core product, losing it would have negatively affected users who relied on it alongside the company's web platform.
The Goal? A Supported, Deployable App.
The goals were clear: prevent the Android app from being delisted, modernize and stabilize the existing mobile app, achieve a clean, working Android build, and restore and maintain availability of the app for enterprise customers. The customer was not seeking new features or enhancements, but rather a maintenance and modernization update to bring the app back into a supported, deployable state.
What We Built? An Updated App.
Sembit upgraded all Titanium and React Native libraries to current versions, resolved dependency and build issues across the codebase, and produced a clean, stable Android build of the mobile app. We also assisted with deployment to the Google Play Store and guided the customer through the Google Play review and approval process.
The scope of work was focused on Android, keeping the engagement tight and efficient.
The Results? Stable and Available.
The Android app was successfully modernized and stabilized and was no longer in danger of being delisted. The customer regained a reliable mobile app that continued to support their core web platform, and the project was completed on time and on budget.
Conclusion
This app modernization shows how a focused maintenance takeover can rescue an aging app and keep it in customers' hands. By upgrading outdated libraries, resolving build issues, and guiding the app back through Google Play approval, Sembit restored a stable, deployable Android build that continues to complement the customer's web platform.
